Sheffield Wednesday overcome Barnsley in a Yorkshire derby to take the important three points.

Sheffield Wednesday have come out on top in today's Yorkshire derby that has implications in the Championship's relegation battle.

Wednesday came through 2-1 against Barnsley in a closely fought game.

The home team started well and had the ball in the net after five minutes. The assistant raised his flag, though, and Gary Madine's effort was ruled out.

The match became scrappy after that with the hosts edging possession but without really threatening.

Barnsley did mount an attack towards the end of the first half but Chris Dagnall's shot was well blocked by Miguel Angel Llera.

Madine and Leroy Lita continued to cause problems for Luke Steele in the Barnsley goal but failed to find a goal before half time.

The game continued in the same way in the second half, with few chances for either side.

Wednesday mounted the first attack, though, as a great ball from Llera found Lita in space again but the forward's shot was saved well.

As the pressure increased from the home side, they took the lead. Madine was released by Lita again and this time was onside to slot the ball home.

They double their lead five minutes later. Llera's long free kick missed everyone except Reda Johnson who dived in at the back post to head the ball in.

It could have been 3-0 not long after that but Madine fired his penalty wide five minutes from the end.

There was late drama as Lewis Buxton was sent off before a great consolation goal for Jacob Mellis, but it didn't matter as Wednesday took all three points.
