Eric Black leaves Southampton for personal reasons

First-team coach Eric Black leaves Southampton due to the effects of injuries he sustained during his playing career.

Premier League side Southampton have announced the resignation of first-team coach Eric Black for personal reasons.

The 54-year-old, a part of the St Mary's setup since the summer of 2016, has long suffered from back problems sustained during his playing days and has now been forced to step away from football.

Black stayed on as part of Mauricio Pellegrino's coaching staff following the departure of Claude Puel at the end of last season, but the Saints may now be forced to seek a replacement.

Vice chairman of football Les Reed told the club's official website: "Eric Black is a fine coach and a true professional who is popular with the players and staff and always gave 100% to his job. Fortunately, his situation is not serious and we hope he will be back in a tracksuit at some point in the future.

"Everyone at Southampton wishes him a speedy recovery. I would also personally like to thank him for his diligent work during his time with the club."

Black has previously been embroiled in an undercover Daily Telegraph sting, but was cleared of any wrongdoing by Southampton.
