Southampton boss Ronald Koeman unhappy with point at Everton

Ronald Koeman says that Southampton's 1-1 draw at Everton was "not a step forward".

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has expressed his disappointment after his side failed to take their chances in this afternoon's Premier League match at Everton.

The Saints, who had won three of their previous four matches, were the better side for much of the contest but needed a Sadio Mane equaliser to take a point from Goodison Park.

"I'm really disappointed because it was a big opportunity to win the game, right from the start," BBC Sport quotes Koeman as saying.

"We had a lot of space to play but in the final part it wasn't good enough. The system we played was very offensive with four strikers, you expect to put on more pressure and create chances to score. We didn't do that in the first half.

"At least we had a good reaction to going behind. At least we got one point but at this final part of the season it is not enough. We want to fight for Europe and it is not a step forward."

Up next for Southampton, sitting seventh in the Premier League, is a trip to Aston Villa, who were confirmed as relegated this afternoon.
