Southampton and Brighton & Hove Albion play out a 1-1 draw in Wednesday night's Premier League meeting at St Mary's Stadium.

Southampton and Brighton & Hove Albion have played out a 1-1 draw in Wednesday night's Premier League meeting at St Mary's Stadium.

The Seagulls spurned a great chance to take the lead within the first minute, Jose Izquierdo scooping over from eight yards out following Solly March's square ball across goal.

Chris Hughton's charges continued to apply the pressure and were rewarded with a penalty on 14 minutes when March was brought down by Wesley Hoedt in the box.

Glenn Murray made no mistake from 12 yards, slotting his spot kick low into the bottom right corner and sending Alex McCarthy the other way to give Brighton the lead.

Southampton came close to scoring a freak equaliser on 31 minutes when Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg got in the way of a Mathew Ryan clearance, and the effort rebounded off the Dane but also off the woodwork.

Mauricio Pellegrino's charges ended the half strongly but were frustrated by Brighton's compact defence until just after the hour.

A free kick won by Sofiane Boufal was sent into the box by James Ward-Prowse and met by the heel of Jack Stephens, the ball dispatched into the far corner of the net.

Southampton continued to launch attacks after drawing level, Guido Carrillo bursting forward and unleashing a shot on goal from range on 67 minutes, but the new signing blazed over.

SOUTHAMPTON (4-5-1): McCarthy; Cedric, Stephens, Hoedt, Bertrand; Hojbjerg, Romeu (Carrillo 45'), Davis, Ward-Prowse, Tadic (Boufal 45'); Long (Gabbiadini 79')

BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION (4-4-1-1): Ryan; Schelotto, Dunk, Duffy, Bong; March, Propper, Stephens, Izquierdo; Gross (Kayal 82'); Murray (Ulloa 76')
