Hugo Lloris happy with 'sweeper' role

Hugo Lloris says that he is happy to perform the 'sweeper' role that allows Tottenham Hotspur to play with a high defensive line.

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has revealed that he is happy with his 'sweeper' role.

Manager Andre Villas-Boas's favoured high defensive line and pressing game mean that the French goalkeeper often has to command the area around his penalty box.

The high-risk strategy puts a lot of pressure on Lloris to perform with his feet as well as his hands, but it is a role that he is happy to perform.

"We want to have possession of the ball and for that we try to play very high and keep the ball on the opponent's side," Lloris told The Observer.

"Sometimes you need to take some risks and in the course of a season maybe you can lose one, two or three games but it's a good way for us to play because we have the players to play that system.

"I try to control my box. I always think the goalkeeper has to be the chief of the box, it's his area and he has to defend it. It's true that with Spurs maybe I have to control the box and just outside of it but I don't have a problem with that."

Spurs take on Aston Villa at 4pm on Sunday.
