Gareth Bale scores twice as Tottenham Hotspur ease to victory over Wigan Athletic this evening.

Gareth Bale scored twice as Tottenham Hotspur recorded a comfortable victory over Wigan Athletic at White Hart Lane this evening.

The Welsh international opened the scoring after 29 minutes when he controlled a pass from Luka Modric before sending his shot beyond the reach of visiting goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi.

The same two players were involved in Spurs' second goal five minutes later. Bale found Benoit Assou-Ekotto, who in turn crossed for Modric. The Croatian took one touch before beating Al-Habsi on the turn.

Wigan offered little as an attacking threat and the match was put beyond them with 64 minutes played. Bale went past James McCarthy and then fired past Al-Habsi from the edge of the area.

The visitors did manage to claim a late goal through substitute James McArthur, whose shot looped over Brad Friedel in the Spurs goal via a deflection off Scott Parker.

However, McArthur's intervention failed to inspire a comeback from Wigan, who remain bottom of the table.
