Sunderland's Martin O'Neill wants permanent move for Danny Rose from Tottenham Hotspur

Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill says that Danny Rose is open to a permanent move from Tottenham Hotspur to the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland manager Martin O'Neill has revealed that the club will try to sign Danny Rose on a permanent basis in the winter window next month.

The 22-year-old has been at the Stadium of Light since the summer after finalising a season-long loan from Tottenham Hotspur but O'Neill has stated that the England Under-21 international wants to stay in the North East.

"He wants to remain at the football club and that is encouraging," the Northern Echo quotes O'Neill as saying. "If he went back to Tottenham, particularly with [Benoit] Assou-Ekotto getting fit again, the chances are he wouldn't play that often, so it's certainly worth a look at anyway.

"He would love to stay here. He's got on terrifically well with everyone. The players have taken to him, everybody has taken to him. Most importantly, the crowd have taken to him and rightly so because he has been absolutely outstanding."

Meanwhile, the Black Cats are facing a relegation fight after they dropped into the bottom three of the Premier League table following their 3-1 defeat to Chelsea.
