Stoke City boss Mark Hughes: 'We showed character'

Stoke City boss Mark Hughes praises his team following their win over West Ham United in the Premier League.

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes has praised his side's character during their 3-1 victory over West Ham United in the Premier League.

The Potters boss has admitted that his team could have defended the set piece that led to the Hammers' goal more effectively, but was satisfied with his players' overall performance.

"It was frustrating because we talked all week about the threat at set pieces," he told Sky Sports News. "But we showed character and I thought we were excellent in the end.

"We stood up to West Ham United in the second half man for man and you knew at some point we would get a chance or two.

"It's a huge three points, we're 10th in the league and looking good."

Hughes also singled out man-of-the-match Stephen Ireland for praise.

"I thought he was excellent from start to finish and it's frustrating he didn't get on the score sheet," he added. "I know what quality he has and he's doing really well."

The result leaves Stoke in 10th place in the Premier League table.
