Sunderland winger Adam Johnson has backed manager Paolo Di Canio's disciplinary methods as long as it helps the Black Cats secure more wins next season.

Sunderland winger Adam Johnson has given his backing to manager Paolo Di Canio and his disciplinary methods following a reported player revolt on Wearside.

Di Canio criticised and fined several players in his squad for their unprofessional behaviour and singled out defender Phil Bardsley after the former Manchester United right-back was photographed in a casino the night before a training session.

Johnson told the Northern Echo: "He's come in, and managers have new things that they want to do. The gaffer is big on discipline and if it means us getting more wins, I'm all for it.

"There's nothing worse than losing game after game after game after game all season. I haven't been used to that in my career, so it's been difficult."

Johnson moved to Sunderland last summer from Manchester City for £10m.
