Sunderland's Ellis Short: 'Gus Poyet is right man to take us forward'

Sunderland chairman Ellis Short believes that new head coach Gus Poyet's "passion" will help move the club forward.

Sunderland chairman Ellis Short is confident that he has found the "right man" to lead the Black Cats following the appointment of Gus Poyet.

The former Brighton & Hove Albion boss has been named as the club's new head coach on a two-year deal following the dismissal of Paolo Di Canio.

Short told the club's official website: "We analysed a wide range of candidates and believe that Gus's track record, experience, commitment and passion make him the right man to take us forward. We welcome him to Sunderland."

Kevin Ball took temporary charge of the Sunderland first team, who sit at the bottom of the Premier League table, for three matches after Di Canio's exit.
