Goals from John Terry and Daniel Sturridge help Chelsea defeat Sunderland 2-1 at the Britannia.

Sunderland suffered a 1-2 home defeat to Chelsea at the Stadium of Light this afternoon.

John Terry put the Blues ahead after Juan Mata's free kick hit the post.

The ball fell to Daniel Sturridge, who crossed for the England captain to slot home at the second attempt.

Sturridge, who was replacing Fernando Torres in the Chelsea lineup, doubled Chelsea's lead six minutes into the second half.

The Englishman ran clear of the Sunderland defence before squeezing a backheel under the advancing Simon Mignolet.

The Black Cats scored a late consolation with Ji Dong-Won grabbing his first for the club.

Chelsea move up to second behind Manchester City while Sunderland remain 16th on two points.
