Santalab bundled home from close range on 87 minutes to give the Wanderers a much-deserved victory, which moves them to within four points of A-League leaders Brisbane Roar, who were beaten at home by Adelaide United earlier in the day.
Tony Popovic's side struck the woodwork four times before eventually breaking the deadlock, with Mark Bridge, Youssouf Hersi and Tomislav Juric all going close.
The game also saw 16-year-old Daniel Alessi make his debut for the Wanderers at right-back.
