Preview: Wigan Athletic vs. Queens Park Rangers

Sports Mole looks ahead to this Wednesday's Championship clash between Wigan Athletic and Queens Park Rangers.

Last time these two sides met, they were Premier League clubs.

That was last season and both matches ended in draws. The fixture at the DW Stadium ended 2-2, with the now departed James McCarthy scoring twice for the home side.

This time around three Championship points are up for grabs. Some would argue that they are more important to Owen Coyle's Wigan, who despite being made one of the favourites for promotion, currently sit 14th in the table.

They will be without Scottish international Shaun Maloney on Wednesday because of a hip injury, but attacking midfielder Jordi Gomez could be recalled.

Meanwhile, the visiting R's will have to make do with the absence of Joey Barton, who is suspended after he picked up his fifth yellow card of the campaign last time out against Burnley.

That match at Turf Moor ended in a 2-0 victory for the home side, which in turn was QPR's first league defeat of the season. However, victory against Wigan would see them close the gap on the leaders to two points.
