Wigan Athletic boss Malky Mackay open to Grant Holt return

Wigan Athletic manager Malky Mackay reveals that striker Grant Holt could still have a future at the club.

Wigan Athletic manager Malky Mackay has admitted that Grant Holt could have a future at the club.

The 33-year-old is currently out on loan at fellow Championship side Huddersfield Town, after falling out of favour with Mackay's predecessor Uwe Rosler.

Holt has helped the Terriers to climb away from the bottom of the table since joining them in September, and Mackay has revealed that the striker could be given the opportunity to make a success of his Wigan career.

"We'll have to clear up the terms of the existing loan deal, I'm not too sure on the details," Mackay told the Wigan Evening Post.

"But Grant Holt is absolutely a Wigan Athletic player, make no mistake about that. He is someone I don't know personally, but I do know through my connections at Norwich City – with both of us having played down there – how well he did for them and overall in his career.

"There's an understanding from me of what he brings in terms of goalscoring ability, and he's still a Wigan player, very much so."

Holt joined Wigan from Norwich for an undisclosed fee in July 2013.
