Andre Schurrle has paid tribute to Wolfsburg teammate Bas Dost after his four goals in the remarkable 5-4 victory over Bundesliga rivals Bayer Leverkusen.
Despite looking in control of the game with a 3-0 half-time lead, Wolfsburg were stunned by a second-half comeback from the hosts before Dost eventually clinched the win with his fourth goal in stoppage time at the BayArena.
"Bas Dost was phenomenal today, that goes without saying. If a striker - or any player for that matter - scores four goals, it's unbelievable," Schurrle told the official Bundesliga website.
"That's not something you see every year and that's why he was the standout player on the pitch today."
Schurrle was jeered on his return to the club he left to join Chelsea in 2013, but insistsed that the reaction did not affect him.
"I wasn't bothered by the reception I got from the Leverkusen fans. It was a shame, but it doesn't bother me," the World Cup winner added.
Despite the victory, Wolfsburg remain eight points behind leaders Bayern Munich in the table.
