Wolverhampton Wanderers reportedly hit a stumbling block in their attempts to fill their vacant managerial role, with former Benfica manager Bruno Lage the top candidate.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly hit a stumbling block in their pursuit of Bruno Lage to replace Nuno Espirito Santo.

After four seasons with Wolves, Nuno took charge of his final game at Molineux last Sunday and the West Midlands club have identified former Benfica manager Lage as his successor.

Along with Nuno's exit went a large proportion of the Wolves backroom staff and for Lage to bring his preferred assistants to England, the club must navigate new Brexit rules.

Football Insider reports that new Brexit laws mean that anyone arriving in England for work purposes must acquire a visa and for football management, Lage and his staff would need a degree and five years' experience in bands one to five or at international level.

Band one covers the top five European leagues and these regulations may mean that Wolves' announcement of a new manager could be weeks away rather than in the coming days.

Lage managed Benfica's first team from January 2019 to the summer of 2020, overseeing 76 games, and has worked in England before as an assistant at Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea City.
