Top European clubs, leagues propose May 2022 World Cup

Europe's top clubs and leagues want the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to be held in May.

Europe's leading clubs and leagues have proposed that the 2022 World Cup in Qatar be held predominantly in May.

The European Club Association (ECA) said in October that they wanted the tournament to take place between April 28 and May 29, but a new joint proposal with European Professional Football Leagues (EPFL) has pushed that back to May 5 to June 4.

The proposal would see the Champions League final take place on Saturday, April 23 before the release of players to their national squads on Monday, April 25.

European football's governing body UEFA is said to be keen on a January-February 2023 tournament, while FIFA want it played in November-December 2022.

The ECA and EPFL believe that their proposed date means that the climate should be bearable and that there will be minimal disruption to the domestic season.
