The FIA have confirmed that Marussia Formula 1 driver Jules Bianchi is in a "critical but stable" condition in hospital after suffering a severe head injury during Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix.

The 25-year-old Frenchman is being treated at Mie General Medical Center in Yokkaichi after he collided with a recovery vehicle that was tending to Adrian Sutil's Sauber during the rain-affected race at Suzuka.

Last night, the FIA released a statement claiming that the sportsman, who has undergone an operation, is "critical but stable".

It has also been confirmed that FIA president Jean Todt has asked F1 race director Charlie Whiting to "carry out a report on the precise circumstances which led to the accident".

Bianchi's family have since arrived at the facility in Japan.
