Jenson Button: 'McLaren need to close points gap on Ferrari'

Jenson Button says that McLaren should be looking to rectify their deficit to Ferrari in the constructors' championship.

Jenson Button believes that McLaren need to make good use of their upgrades at the Austrian Grand Prix and begin closing the gap to Ferrari in the constructors' championship.

The Woking-based outfit trail their Italian counterparts by 21 points coming into the race at Red Bull Ring, but the 2009 world champion revealed that this weekend was earmarked as the place for the team's development's push to start and Button tried to play down the significance of the effect those upgrades will have.

He told reporters: "It's not that big. We have upgrades, yes, but we've had upgrades most races this year so we're not going to suddenly be fighting up at the front.

"But because the pack behind the first team is so close, even one tenth in a race makes a big difference; 70 lap race, seven seconds.

"Hopefully it will make a big enough difference to score some good points, like we have done in the last two races. Interestingly we're only 21 points behind Ferrari in the constructors', so I don't know how that happened, but that has to be an aim for us, to close that gap."

Button is currently seventh in the drivers' standings, 20 points ahead of rookie teammate Kevin Magnussen.
