Red Bull adviser Dr Helmut Marko believes the mid-season clampdown on wing flexibility could give Max Verstappen an edge over his rivals.

Red Bull adviser Dr Helmut Marko believes the mid-season clampdown on wing flexibility could give Max Verstappen an edge over his rivals.

Marko, however, criticised the FIA's choice to delay stricter front wing flexibility tests until the Barcelona race in June.

"Now everyone except the smaller teams has built a wing that bends," he told Auto Motor und Sport. "It's insane that they will all throw them away in the middle of the season.

"Either the new rule should apply right from the start or not at all. The FIA should have realised by now that rules have to be written in such a way that there are no grey areas like this."

With today's technical rules and cars so well-developed, flexible front wings don't deliver raw speed as much as a more stable, predictable car - like the McLaren.

When asked if the ban could therefore play to Verstappen's strengths, Marko nodded: "It will definitely advantage Max.

"No one else handles a difficult car like he does."

Former F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone shares the view that if 2025 proves challenging, four-time world champion Verstappen—not McLaren's frontrunners—will shine brightest.

"Will a McLaren driver win the world championship? I have serious doubts," he told sport.de.

"Give Max the right car and you will see what happens. Is (Lando) Norris as good as Max? The answer is no."
