More British F1 pundits may follow Damon Hill in departing Sky's English-language Formula 1 coverage amid accusations of bias.
Hill, the 1996 world champion and a long-time member of Sky's commentary team, has announced his departure. The decision comes in the wake of his controversial comments about Max Verstappen, in which he accused the Dutchman of "using fear and intimidation" in his racing.
The remarks sparked backlash, with many accusing Hill of clearly favouring Verstappen's title rival Lando Norris. Members of Verstappen's camp also joined in the criticism, adding to the pressure.
Former Sky F1 pundit Johnny Herbert, himself removed from the broadcaster's lineup ahead of the 2023 season, speculated about Hill's departure.
"I don't know whether it was his decision or Sky's, to be honest," Herbert said. "I know he got criticism for the Max scenarios and maybe he felt 'You know what, I don't need that.' There is change going on."
Herbert also questioned whether Hill's exit could signal a broader shift at Sky.
"If he was pushed, then you wonder what could happen to Martin Brundle and David Croft," Herbert mused.
Indeed, Croft, Sky UK's lead commentator, and Brundle, his widely admired and extremely long-serving co-commentator, have also faced accusations of anti-Verstappen bias in recent weeks.
Herbert revealed that Hill had been deeply affected by the backlash.
"He was very unhappy at the crazy level of abuse he got over his Max comments," Herbert said. "Maybe all that negativity made him decide."
