Sergio Perez has given a clear indication that he plans to re-enter Formula 1.
Mario Andretti, a Formula 1 icon and advisor to the incoming Cadillac team for 2026, recently disclosed that the former Red Bull driver is under consideration as an "option."
Currently, the 35-year-old Perez—a seasoned grand prix victor with substantial backing from Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim's enterprises—is relishing a break from the sport. "I have six months," he told Prodynamics.
"I gave myself six months to see what options I have and decide what the next step in my career is.
"The doors are open in many places," Perez continued. "Today I have the opportunity to decide what I want with my career. What comes next is important, so I want to give myself the time and space to make the best decision."
Despite faltering alongside Max Verstappen in recent times, leading to his demise, Perez's reputation has rebounded, especially as his replacement, Liam Lawson, was dropped after only two races, proving to be basically the slowest driver in Shanghai.
"I mean, for certain races last year, Sergio is now looking like a magician," remarked ex-F1 driver Mark Webber, who manages Chinese GP winner Oscar Piastri, on Formula For Success.
Fox Sports reports that discussions between Cadillac and Perez are "already underway."
Red Bull advisor Dr Helmut Marko disclosed last Friday that, during the team's debate over Lawson's fate, he spoke with Perez—supposedly about "tequila."
For Cadillac, Andretti also noted another Mexican, Indycar standout Pato O'Ward, as a contender, though securing him might require the team to "fight" to free him from his McLaren contract.
