Michael Schumacher's son: 'Father said records are there to be broken'

Lewis Hamilton is on the brink of equalling the German's proud record of 91 victories in Formula One.

Mick Schumacher said his father told him "records are there to be broken" on the eve of Lewis Hamilton's attempt to match the German's victory tally.

Hamilton will head into Sunday's Russian Grand Prix just one triumph shy of Michael Schumacher's record 91 victories.

Schumacher's current condition is a closely guarded secret following his skiing accident in France almost seven years ago.

His son, Mick, who extended his championship lead in Formula Two  – the feeder series to Formula One – after he won in Sochi on Saturday said: "One sentence my dad always used to say was records are there to be broken.

"It's everybody's aim in the sport to do that and Lewis has had a very, very good run.

"Obviously from the family's position, we see it on a good side, too. It is good for the sport and Lewis has been very influential in F1.

"But the next aim would be for me, if I do make the step into Formula One, is to break that."

Schumacher, 21, is a member of the Ferrari junior academy and could be an F1 driver as early as next season.

F1's motorsport boss Ross Brawn, who masterminded Schumacher's seven world championships, first at Benetton and then Ferrari, said: "Mick is driving superbly at the moment in Formula Two. He'll surely be on the F1 grid soon."
