The American is closely followed by fellow countryman Billy Horschel, who posted a third round score of 70.
Webb Simpson, who is in the hunt for the top spot of the PGA Tour money list, hit a round of 69 to leave him 11-under.
Simpson is tied for third with South Africa's James Kingston, who is the highest-placed non-American at the event.
