Billy Horschel claims two-shot victory in BMW Championship

Billy Horschel holds off the challenge of his rivals to claim victory in the BMW Championship.

Billy Horschel recovered a disappointing finish last week to record a two-shot victory at the BMW Championship on Sunday.

The American came agonisingly close to winning the Deutsche Bank Championship a week ago before a late error forced him to settle for second place, but he responded in impressive fashion to move up to second place in the FedEx Cup standings ahead of next weekend's Tour Championship.

Horschel led by three shots heading into the final day, and produced a calm display under pressure on his way to a one-under-par round of 69 at Cherry Hills County Club.

Bubba Watson came closest to catching the leader, who finished the event on 16-under, but the two-time Masters champion's 66 was not enough to deny Horschel.

Morgan Hoffman finished his week a shot further back following a final round of 63, while Jim Furyk, Sergio Garcia, Ryan Palmer and Rickie Fowler were all on nine-under after 72 holes in Colorado.

World number one Rory McIlroy shot a 66 to finish eighth, and it is the Northern Irishman, Horschel, Watson, Hunter Mahan and leader Chris Kirk who have a chance of collecting the $10m (£6.2m) bonus who with a win next week.
