Olympic gymnast Beth Tweddle announces retirement

Olympic gymnast Beth Tweddle announces her decision to retire from the sport.

British Olympian Beth Tweddle has announced her decision to retire from gymnastics.

There had been suggestions that the 28-year-old would call time on her career as Britain's most successful gymnast following the London Olympic Games last summer.

"It's been a hard decision to make; gymnastics has been and always will be a massive part of my life," BBC Sport quotes Tweddle as saying. "I know deep down I can't commit to the hours and training to remain at the very top.

"I don't think my achievements will ever really sink in but when I do look back I can be very proud of what I've done and how I've done it. With hard work there's always a way to succeed and always a way to achieve your dreams."

Tweddle ends her career after winning an Olympic bronze medal on the uneven bars last year, as well as securing six gold medals at the European Championships and three golds at the World Championships.
