Real Madrid are reportedly on the verge of agreeing a new contract to secure the long-term future of defender Raul Asencio.

Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio is reportedly on the verge of signing a new deal with Los Blancos.

Asencio has established himself in the first-team set up this season after learning his craft in Real Madrid's academy system.

The 22-year-old made his La Liga debut in November after the door to the first team opened up due to injuries to Eder Militao and David Alaba.

Asencio has since gone on to feature in 30 competitive matches for Carlo Ancelotti's side, with 20 of those appearances coming from the first whistle.

Asencio set to sign new Real Madrid contract

Real Madrid are now keen to secure Asencio's long-term future, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the 2025-26 season.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the centre-back turned down Real Madrid's first proposal amid reported interest from Premier League outfit Nottingham Forest.

However, according to Fabrizio Romano, Asencio is on the verge of signing new deal with the reigning European champions.

The update claims that an agreement over a new long-term deal is nearly agreed, with the two parties set to work out the final details in the coming weeks.

Asencio is keen to continue his career at the Santiago Bernabeu, meaning it is only a matter of time before a new contract is officially announced.

Will Asencio's contract impact defender search?

Asencio's new deal is unlikely to affect Real Madrid's quest to strengthen their central defensive options in the transfer market.

Los Blancos are keen to add further depth following this season's injury issues, while they also want to freshen up their current options with Rudiger and Alaba both in their 30s.

Real Madrid are believed to view Bournemouth's defender Dean Huijsen as one of their top targets for the summer transfer window.

Huijsen, who is in Spain's senior squad with Asencio, has admitted it is an "honour" to be linked with a move to one of the biggest clubs in world football.
