Team USA hockey General Manager to miss Winter Olympics due to facial injury

Team USA's hockey general manager will miss the Winter Olympics due to a facial injury sustained after being hit in the face by a puck.

Team USA ice hockey General Manager David Poile will not travel to Sochi for the Winter Olympics due to injuries sustained last week.

Poile had to undergo surgery after being struck in the face by a puck in a freak accident.

It was not known whether or not the 63-year-old would still travel to the Games, but United States officials have now confirmed that Pile will be staying at his home in Nashville to recover.

"We're in very good and constant communication with David the past three days and certainly today," assistant executive director of hockey operations for Team USA, Jim Johannson, is quoted as saying by the Daily Press. "He's our general manager. It's just unfortunate that he can't join us in Sochi.

"One of the things USA Hockey is proud of is how we've built this management group to assist our national teams at all levels and this just shows the strength we have as a group.

"We're going to miss David as a friend, probably more than anything. But we're going to miss a guy that's been so dedicated to our programs. We'll be carrying a big part of him with us all week."

Ray Shero, who is the General Manager of NHL side Pittsburgh Penguins, will take over as acting GM.
