England's Anna Mayes "proud" despite slender defeat

Anna Mayes says that she is "proud" of her England players after seeing Australia condemn them to their first defeat of the Glasgow Games.

England netball coach Anna Mayes has insisted that she is "proud" of her players, despite a narrow 49-48 defeat against Australia.

Caitlin Bassett clinched the win late on for Australia to condemn England to their first defeat of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

"It was hyped up as one of the games of the tournament and it definitely delivered," Mayes told reporters after the game at the SECC Arena. "I was really proud of the girls in particular the way they came out in the first and third quarters.

"They showed passion and fire in their bellies – exactly what I would expect from this England side but we are obviously disappointed to lose by one goal."

Australia top the pool with three games remaining.
