Robbie Savage helps team win £87,000 for charity on 'The Chase'

Robbie Savage helps to create quizzing history by teaming up with Andrea McLean, Jessica Taylor and Rory McGrath to win £87,000 for charity on 'The Chase'.

Former Leicester City and Derby County midfielder Robbie Savage has helped create quizzing history.

In a celebrity episode of ITV1 show 'The Chase', which was aired on Saturday night, the 39-year-old was part of a team that won a record-breaking £87,000 for charity.

Savage was joined by Loose Women presenter Andrea McLean, Liberty X singer Jessica Taylor and Arsenal-supporting comedian Rory McGrath.

The quartet were up against Mark Labbett, whom Savage immediately insulted by describing him as the "thickest" chaser.

However, the Welshman seemed intimidated by Labbett when he came head-to-head with 'The Beast'.

After answering just four of 10 'cash-builder' questions correctly, Savage was offered the chance to play for £52,000 by moving a step closer to the chaser.

He declined and instead elected to move further away, reducing his prize from £4,000 to £1,000, which he brought back to his team fairly comfortably.

McLean and McGrath added modest sums of £8,000 and £3,000 respectively to the team prize pot, but, luckily for Savage and company, Taylor had the ambition and knowledge to take advantage of Labbett's generous big offers, scraping home with a mammoth £75,000.

Boosted by a 'full house' going into the 'final chase', the team, with minimal help from Savage, managed to set the chaser an imposing target of 22.

Labbett could only score 16, meaning that the players each won £21,750 for their chosen charities, which in Savage's case was 'Project Africa'.

The Chase's previous highest payout in the United Kingdom was £60,000, which Larry Connelly won by beating Labbett single-handedly earlier this year.

Savage is not the only ex-footballer to have appeared on The Chase in 2013. Matt Le Tissier has also taken on 'The Beast', but the Southampton legend was unable to win any money for his chosen charity.
