Metropolitan Police make one arrest in Chelsea coin-throw probe

The Metropolitan Police announce that they have made one arrest after a male was alleged to have thrown an object in the direction of Manchester City's David Faupala.

A man has been arrested in relation to an incident that took place during Chelsea's 5-1 FA Cup fifth-round victory over Manchester City on Sunday evening.

Objects were thrown from the lower section of the Matthew Harding Stand in the direction of the Citizens' players as they celebrated David Faupala's leveller 37 minutes into the game.

The Metropolitan Police have moved quickly to make an arrest after one supporter was alleged to have thrown a lighter onto the field of play.

After being identified, the unnamed fan was taken into police custody where he underwent questioning.

"On Sunday, 21 February, officers arrested a man (no further details) in connection with an incident that took place during the Chelsea and Manchester City match at Stamford Bridge," a Met Police statement read.

"The man was arrested for throwing a lighter onto the pitch and he currently remains in custody pending further enquires. Officers continue to carry out enquires into incidents of coin throwing."

Chelsea have vowed to ban any "idiotic" supporters found guilty of throwing objects, which marred an otherwise perfect day for the club as they set up a quarter-final tie with Everton.

The incident comes a day after Chris Brunt was struck by a coin by a travelling West Bromwich Albion spectator during the Baggies' 3-1 defeat to Reading at the Madejski Stadium.
