Former Liverpool owner and honorary life president of the club David Moores is taken to hospital having been assaulted during a violent burglary at his home.

Former Liverpool owner David Moores has been taken to hospital following a burglary at his home.

The 69-year-old was assaulted during the incident at his house in Halsall, near Southport, after two men had forced their way in and demanded cash and jewellery.

Moores, who is said to be in a stable condition, was taken to Aintree Hospital with leg and head injuries after the assailants escaped with jewellery and watches.

"We believe this was an isolated, targeted attack and I would like to reassure local residents that we have stepped up patrols in the area," said Detective Inspector Marc Nasser of Lancashire Police.

"The investigation remains in its early stages but if you have any information that could assist us, please do get in touch."

Moores, who is also the honorary life president of the club, sold his stake in Liverpool to Tom Hicks and George Gillett in 2007 having been chairman since 1991.
