Olympic champion Usain Bolt was verbally abused and targeted by a spectator, who threw a beer bottle onto the track ahead of the Jamaican sprinter's race at London 2012, a court has heard.

Ashley Gill-Webb was arrested for throwing a bottle from the VIP area seconds before the men's 100m final in the Olympic Stadium in the summer and is believed to have shouted, "Usain, you are bad, you are an a******e."

Prosecutor Neil King told Stratford Magistrates' Court: "Mr Gill-Webb had somehow made his way into very exclusive seats indeed. While there, he hurled abuse towards the athletes, particularly towards Usain Bolt.

"He threw a green Heineken bottle in a lobbing motion that was captured on CCTV. The bottle landed extremely close to the athletes and it's probably luck rather than Mr Gill-Webb's judgment that it didn't do anything more serious."

Gill-Webb has admitted to throwing the bottle but has claimed that he suffers from bipolar disorder.
