Oscar Pistorius 'given new privileges in jail following prisoner upgrade'

Six-time Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius is reportedly given more privileges behind bars after his prisoner status was upgraded.

Six-time Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius has reportedly been given new privileges in jail after his prisoner status was upgraded.

The double amputee is currently serving a five-year sentence behind bars, but could move into house arrest after 10 months of the term.

The 28-year-old was found guilty of culpable homicide (manslaughter) after shooting dead his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp through a bathroom door at his home in Pretoria during the early hours of Valentine's Day 2013.

According to the Daily Mail, the authorities at Kgosi Mampuru prison have upgraded Pistorius's status to category A from category B as he does not pose much threat to security.

It has been reported that the Paralympian is now allowed to have physical contact with his visitors, wear jewellery, own a radio and make more phone calls than originally permitted.

It is believed that Pistorius can also take up a hobby and will have a larger budget to use on toiletries and treats in prison.
