Joey Barton: 'Queens Park Rangers move driven by money'

Joey Barton admits that he signed for Queens Park Rangers purely for the money and vows never to make a similar decision again.

Joey Barton has admitted that his decision to sign for Queens Park Rangers was based purely on financial gain.

The 30-year-old left Newcastle United to join QPR last summer in a deal which came as a surprise at the time.

Barton revealed that he was driven by money to move to west London and has vowed never to make the same mistake again.

He told The Mirror: "When I went to QPR, it was a choice dictated by money. I didn't like what I had done and I swore I'd never do that again.

"It was the first time in my life that I had taken a decision for money. I did it because my partner was due to give birth, but I did not feel good about it.

"The more money you have, the more problems you have. When I was in prison I got £7 a week and that was simpler, you'd use the £7 to buy food and that was it."

Barton is due to make his Ligue 1 debut for Marseille against Lille tonight after completing a 12-match domestic ban for violent conduct dating back to his time at Loftus Road.
