Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp has revealed that he was "frightened" of spending years in jail before the conclusion of his trail for alleged tax evasion.

The 66-year-old, who was manager of Tottenham Hotspur at the time, was cleared of all charges at Southwark Crown Court in February last year following allegations that two payments of approximately £100,000 were paid into a Monaco bank account in a bid to avoid paying tax.

Redknapp has described in his autobiography Always Managing: My Autobiography, which is being serialised by the Daily Mail, that he feared for his wife Sandra.

"I felt very frightened," wrote Redknapp. "[Two to three years] was a long sentence, a proper villain's sentence. And his words hung over me as I prepared for court. My mind would come back to the image of a cell. How was I going to live? I wasn't sure I could handle it.

"I knew my wife Sandra couldn't. I know Sandra found it difficult just going to the shops where she always went. She thought people were gaping, and whispering, too."

Redknapp has also criticised the Football Association's inability to recruit the right England manager.
