Russian diplomat plays down Sochi security fears

Russia's ambassador to the USA insists that there is nothing to worry about with safety and security in Sochi.

Russia's ambassador to the USA, Sergey Ivanovich Kislyak, has played down security concerns in Sochi.

The ongoing Winter Olympics in the Russian city have come under scrutiny because of two suicide bomb attacks in Volgograd in December 2013.

"There are lots of security assets that were put in place," he told Larry King's Politicking show broadcast on Russia Today. "Certainly terrorism is a global phenomenon. So when you think or talk about terrorism trend, then it applies equally to Russia and to your country (USA).

"I will just point to the recent Super Bowl that was so well protected that I understood that your law enforcement also takes on that kind of threats and challenges very seriously.

"Russia is a responsible country and we certainly have a lot of assets to deploy, which we have already done. We are pretty comfortable that everything will be fine."

The opening ceremony of the Sochi Games will be held on Friday.
