Former Olympic gold medallist Linford Christie has revealed that he once suffered racist abuse at the hands of a police officer during his athletics career.

The retired British sprinter has recalled an incident in 1986 shortly after he won gold at the European Indoor Championships.

During an ITV4 documentary, Christie said: "I remember when I got my Great Britain tracksuit, I was so proud. I walked along Shepherd's Bush, this policeman started saying, 'what's a nigger like you doing in a British tracksuit?'

"I went into a chip shop and came out of the shop, and he jumped me, twisted my arm behind my back, and arrested me. The next day they dropped all charges. It was just so stupid."

The 54-year-old, who now works as an athletes coach, tested positive for banned substance nandrolone back in 1999.
