Watford 'in talks to increase Vicarage Road capacity'

Watford's chairman and chief executive Scott Duxbury says the club are exploring options to increase the capacity of Vicarage Road.

Watford are reportedly aiming to increase the capacity of their Vicarage Road stadium.

The Hornets have held talks with Watford Borough Council about upgrading the ground so it can hold 30,000 spectators, according to the Watford Observer.

The stadium currently has a capacity of 21,577, a figure it reached when 700 additional seats were added to coincide with the club winning promotion to the Premier League in 2015.

According to the report, more new seats could be added to either the Graham Taylor or Sir Elton John stands to take Vicarage Road up to 30,000 capacity.

"We've engaged a company to conduct a survey to see how we can expand the stadium but still keep the aesthetic look we have now. They are looking at the Sir Elton John stand and the Graham Taylor stand and seeing what is the most effective way for us to expand," Watford chairman and chief executive Scott Duxbury is quoted as saying.

"We are already in dialogue with the council. While I won't go into specific timelines, we hope that sooner rather than later we will be able to close on a plan.

"We are looking at two scenarios, one taking us to 25,000 and one taking us to 30,000. I would like to take us to 30,000, because it puts us in that tier of clubs just outside the top six."

Watford are currently 11th in the Premier League.
