Sochi mayor: 'No gay people' in Winter Olympics host city

Sochi mayor Anatoly Pakhomov claims that gay people are "not accepted" in the Winter Olympics 2014 host city.

The mayor of Russian city Sochi, which will host the Winter Olympics 2014, has claimed that gay people are non-existent in the region.

Russian President Vladimir Putin's 'gay propaganda' law has sparked controversy around the world, raising concerns over the safety of athletes and visitors to the city during the Games.

Mayor Anatoly Pakhomov told Panorama: "Our hospitality will be extended to everyone who respects the laws of the Russian Federation and doesn't impose their habits on others."

When asked if gay people would have to hide their sexuality, Pakhomov said: "No, we just say that it is your business, it's your life, but it's not accepted here in the Caucasus where we live. We do not have them in our city."

The Games officially get underway on February 7.
