Tony Smith: 'Warrington Wolves deserve St Helens win'

Warrington Wolves coach Tony Smith believes that his side fully deserved their 32-16 victory over local rivals St Helens in their final Super League game of the season.

Warrington Wolves coach Tony Smith has suggested that his side deserved their derby victory over St Helens on Thursday evening.

Visitors Wolves scored six tries as they defeated the Saints 32-16 at Langtree Park, and Smith believes that the victory was a fitting send-off for his side's departing players - including Joel Monaghan, who scored his 145th try in 145 appearances for the club.

"I'm really pleased. It's nice to back up a good performance from last week," Smith told reporters after the game. "That's probably what we've lacked at times this year, that consistency, but it shows it does matter whether you're in the finals or not.

"It was getting a bit risky there for us because Saints hang in there and I'm glad we ended up getting our just desserts. I thought we deserved that scoreline and it was a nice way to finish, particularly for the players that are leaving our club.

"I thought it was a generous pass from [Stefan] Ratchford to give Joel the 145 from 145 but everybody wanted him to get that and for Roy to come up with the try that sealed it for us after a game-saving tackle at the other end was fitting."

The Wolves have finished the Super League season in sixth place.
