Danny Cipriani has his Melbourne Rebels contract terminated by mutual consent.

Danny Cipriani has had his career with the Melbourne Rebels cut short as he prepares to join up with Sale Sharks for pre-season.

The 24-year-old fly-half signed for the Aviva Premiership side in March but was due to see out his current contract with the Australian side.

Despite the Super 15 club being just eight games into their season, the Rebels have decided to terminate Cipriani's contract.

Rebels chief executive Steve Boland said: "Danny goes with our blessing and we thank him for his contribution to our club during his time here.

"Essentially the time is right for both parties to part company, the decision is amicable and we wish him all the best for the future."

Head coach Damien Hill added: "When we signed Danny we were always aware of his ambitions to return to the English national team and we have always been supportive of helping him achieve his goals. Danny believes that leaving now will give him the best chance to prepare for the long season ahead with Sale."

Cipriani reached a club record of 122 points during his time in Australia.
