Philipp Kohlschreiber books his place in the Australian Open third round with a straight-sets win over spirited Israeli qualifier Amir Weintraub.

Philipp Kohlschreiber was forced to produce his best tennis at the Australian Open this morning to overcome Israeli qualifier Amir Weintraub.

The 17th seed started strongly and claimed the first set by six games to two in just 24 minutes.

Weintraub rallied and put the German under pressure in the second, forcing the set to a tie-breaker with a mix of strong serving and baseline returns.

Kohlschreiber used his experience to come through a tough patch and claim the tie-break 7-4.

The third set followed a similar pattern until late on as Kohlschreiber gained a crucial break to end Weintraub's stubborn resistance and take the match in straight sets, winning the contest 6-2 7-6(4) 6-4.

Milos Raonic or Lukas Rosol await Kohlschreiber in round three in a section of the draw that also contains Roger Federer.
