British number one Emma Raducanu has been forced to pull out of the Madrid Open due to her troublesome wrist injury.
The 20-year-old was due to take on Bulgaria's Viktoriya Tomova in Wednesday's first-round encounter but withdrew from the Masters event only a few hours before she was due to take the court.
Raducanu's right wrist has caused her a world of problems since the end of 2022, cutting short her season that year and also plaguing her at the recent Miami Open, where she lost to Bianca Andreescu in the first round.
A post from the Madrid Open Twitter account confirmed the Briton's withdrawal, saying: "@EmmaRaducan withdraws from the Mutua Madrid Open due to injury in her right hand. Get well soon!"
The former US Open champion most recently suffered a heavy 2-6 1-6 defeat to Jelena Ostapenko at the Stuttgart Open, having skipped the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers to focus on her clay court preparations.
Raducanu is currently ranked 85th in the world but is now expected to drop out of the top 100, potentially threatening her direct entry routes into future Grand Slam tournaments.
