Serena Williams powers past Carla Suarez Navarro

Serena Williams sees off Carla Suarez Navarro with a 6-2 6-3 victory and progresses to the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open.

Serena Williams has reached the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open after seeing off Carla-Suarez Navarro with a 6-2 6-3 victory.

Williams had lost her serve in the first game of the first set but recovered to break the Spaniard four times to go one set up.

The same thing happened again in the second, but Navarro could not take advantage and the American's class eventually shone through as she wrapped up the win.

Williams will play Petra Kvitova in the next round after the Czech beat Lucie Safarova.
