Serena Williams "honoured" to equal Roger Federer record

Serena Williams says that she is "honoured" to have matched Roger Federer's record of Grand Slam triumphs.

World number one Serena Williams has expressed her delight at drawing level with Roger Federer after winning her 17th Grand Slam title.

The American beat Victoria Azarenka 7-5 6-7 6-1 to claim the US Open crown at Flushing Meadows on Sunday.

Williams, who won the French Open earlier this year, is delighted to have matched the Swiss player's record in major tournaments.

"It's an honour to be even with Roger," said Williams in a press conference. "He's been such a great champion throughout the years, and he's just an unbelievable competitor and he's still playing, and he can probably still win more."

Williams is now just one Grand Slam triumph behind Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova.
