Japanese figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu has said that he is delighted with his performance in the men's individual short programme in Sochi.
The 19-year-old finished Thursday's round with a world-record score of 101.45 points to stay in pole position to win the gold medal in the event at the 2014 Winter Olympics.
"I'm over the moon," the Japan Times quotes the teenager as saying. "I took it one element at a time. I was very, very surprised by the score.
"I wasn't trying to clear 100 points. I was just trying to turn in the best performance I possibly could – and I did.
"I did everything I possibly could today. I will enjoy this for tonight and rest up for tomorrow because it's another day. I'm not thinking about a medal yet."
Patrick Chan of Canada is currently second in the standings, while Spaniard Javier Fernandez is third.
