Team GB's Rebekah Wilson: 'Gamble paid off'

Great Britain's Rebekah Wilson reveals that her gamble to leave British Bobsleigh's training complex paid off as she prepares to compete in Sochi.

Great Britain's Rebekah Wilson has revealed that her gamble to leave British Bobsleigh's training complex paid off ahead of her first Winter Olympic Games.

The 22-year-old pulled out of the national programme and handed back funding from UK Sport as she moved back to Manchester, and was forced to finance herself through her training.

Wilson told the Manchester Evening News: "I guess I made the right decision after all. Then again I am a very determined person. At the time I just felt the set-up in Bath wasn't right for me. However, it was a tough call.

"It was 18 months out from the Olympics and I felt things were going backwards. I knew I could be a better athlete than I was.

"So, I packed up and moved back to Manchester. I was out of touch with British Bobsleigh for 12 months. I told them I would be back in better shape for the Olympic Trials but I am not sure they believed me."

Wilson and teammate Paula Walker will get their bobsleigh campaign underway later today.
