Chris Houston undergoes toe surgery

Detroit Lions head coach Chris Houston undergoes surgery on a toe injury that could keep him out of the team's training camp.

Detroit Lions cornerback Chris Houston has undergone surgery on a toe injury, leaving his training camp participation in doubt.

Houston played through the pain barrier last season but struggled to make his usual impact for the Lions, recording a career-low 44 tackles as well as two interceptions in his 12 appearances.

The 29-year-old is expected to be one of the Lions' starting cornerbacks in the 2014 campaign, but head coach Jim Caldwell admitted that he was unsure whether he would be available for the team's training camp, which gets underway in July.

"I'm not certain, to be honest with you. I kind of leave those things up to our physicians," Caldwell is quoted as saying by ESPN.

"Those guys went to school for a long time to get those medical degrees, and so what I do is try to focus in on what we're doing and I let them sort of navigate through it and give me an indication of it at some point in time."

Last month Caldwell also expressed some concern over whether Houston would be able to return to his best form following his recent injury troubles.
