New York Jets GM Mike Maccagnan focused on Draft rather than Muhammad Wilkerson contract

New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan admits that he is more focused on the NFL Draft than the contract situation of Muhammad Wilkerson

New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan has admitted that his primary concern is with the NFL Draft rather than sealing a contract extension for defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson.

The 25-year-old has become one of the best defensive lineman in the NFL in his four seasons in the league, but is entering the final year of his contract with the AFC East side.

The Jets have yet to start negotiations with Wilkerson and his representatives, which has resulted in his holdout from the club's voluntary workouts.

However, Maccagnan is adamant that he cannot turn his focus to Wilkerson's deal until the Draft has concluded.

"It's voluntary, Mo's under contract obviously as we're all aware," Maccagnan told reporters. "It's voluntary - I'll leave it at that. I don't want to comment on if I'd like him to be here or not be here.

"I'm sure Mo is doing a good job wherever he is working out. But again, it's voluntary so he's not required to be here for that. I didn't personally talk to him, Todd [Bowles] talked to those guys but I've been so focused on the draft.

"We'll deal with Mo and his agent at some point and time. I've been so focused on the draft and I've had other things I've been dealing with for my job."

Wilkerson has recorded 237 tackles, 24.5 sacks and one interception in his four years in the NFL.
